Boston (February 25)Beginning in 1969, the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships (NEICAAA) have spanned a total of 57 years, with various stops and venue locations around the New England countryside. When the men initiated the championships in 1969 at Northeastern’s Cabot Cage, the women followed suite 10-years later in 1979.

Throughout the five-plus decades of mixing it up on the indoor circuit, a plethora of meeting records, both retired and current, have left their mark on these championships. The oldest current men’s record was set in 1980. Boston University’s Glen Cohen, in perhaps one of the greatest 400-meter races ever contested here in New England, set the event’s current meeting record in 46.56 seconds, just ahead of New Haven’s Ed Yearwood, who was a close second in 46.59. The packed crowd at the banked, 200-meter track inside the ancient Commonwealth Armory erupted in euphoria following the dramatic race.

Cohen, a British native, was a member of Great Britain’s 1976 and 1980 Olympic Team. He was coached at BU by David Hemery, himself a two-time Olympian and Gold Medalist for Britain in the 400-Intermediate Hurdles in 1968. Two other current men’s records date back over 40 years, both belonging to BU athletes. Nick Saunders (BU/Bermuda) set the still standing record in the high jump at 6-feet, 3 ½ inches, while Declan Hegarty (BU/Ireland) currently holds the record in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 73-feet, 8 inches.

From the earliest days in the women’s championships, the women’s oldest record dates back 44 years to 1981. BU’s Julie White, an all-around multi-eventer, established the still-standing high jump record with a leap of 6-feet, ½ inch. Additionally, the 33-year-old record in the women’s mile belongs to Geraldine Hendricken (Providence/Ireland) who ran 4:36.14 during the 1992 undercover campaign.

The Complete listing of the men’s and women’s records, both current and retired, is noted below. For previous releases go to WWW.NEICAAA.net. The men’s and women’s two-day competition features a combined 42 events during the championships. The contested events are as follows:
