Boston (February 24) – A plethora of outstanding men and women athletes are set to defend their titles at this year’s NEICAAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for March 7-8 at The Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center and the Bob McIntyre Track at Roxbury Crossing. A total of 24 collegiate men and women will seek to duplicate their 2024 titles during the two-day championships.
This year’s competition will mark the 56th edition of the men’s Championships. Ryan Slaney (Bryant College) - 3,000, 5,000 meters and Matthew Santy (Rhode Island) - high jump, long jump, each were double winners last year with Santy, a sophomore, helping to lead the University of Rhode Island to the team title. Santy captured the high jump at 6-feet, 5-inches and the long jump at 24-feet, 3 ½ inches. The Rams captured a total of six individual events to take the men’s title with 121 points. additionally, Junior Caleb Smith (Middlebury College) returns as the defending champion in the two-day heptathlon. Smith scored a total of 4769 points to outdistance Southern Connecticut’s Dylan Torok, who trailed by 69 points. Torok, a senior this year, will look to turn the tables on defending champion Smith. The only meeting record set last year was by Northeastern University in the 4x800-meter relay. The Huskies claimed the event title in 7-minutes, 24.38 seconds, to break the previous mark of 7:28.9 set by Rhode Island in 1982.
Twelve women return to defend their titles this year in the 47th edition of the women’s championships. Leading the way for the women are two-time defending champions Kasey Thomas (Bryant College) shot put, and Madeline Archangelo (Sacred Heart University) pentathlon. Both athletes were victorious last year while successfully defending their titles from 2023. Thomas has an indoor best in the shot of 48-feet, 8 ¾ inches while finishing third last year at the America East Indoor Championships. The multi-eventer, Archangelo, has a pentathlon indoor best of 3635 points. She set her personal record last year finishing second at the Quaker Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania.
Three individual returning champions from UMass Amherst paced the way for the Lady Minutemen as they captured last year’s title with 119 ½ points. This year’s defending champions for UMass include Alex Constantino (1000m meters), Katelyn Gorgenyi (60m hurdles) and Courtney Rowland (high jump).
